Hawthorn (Cratageus oxycantha)

Help for Heart & Circulation

Hawthorn is high in antioxidant flavonoids.(1-4)

Hawthorn extracts have been well researched and are widely used in Europe to treat many types of heart conditions including:

  • atherosclerosis (3,5-6)
  • hyperlipidemia (3,5-6,14)
  • congestive heart failure (CHF) (3,7-12,14)
  • high blood pressure (13-15)
  • angina (16)

Hawthorn works by dilating (opening) coronary and peripheral blood vessels and improving oxygen utilization in the heart muscle. The proanthocyanidins (PCO's) in Hawthorn have been shown to lower cholesterol levels and decrease the size of cholesterol-containing plaques in the arteries.
